This pastel portrait of Pippa was commissioned as a present for a husband's special birthday. The photo used for the portrait was taken during a photo session by Yorkshire Pet Portraits. Trying to capture Pippa's unique pose of casually-crossed-paws-when-lying-down proved a challenge too far though! A morning of encouraging Pippa to do her 'party trick' was unsuccessful though did it produce some fantastic photos.
A selection of the photos taken during the shoot are shown below along with the photograph used for the portrait. And Pippa did do her 'party trick', only when we were looking at the photos on a laptop computer with camera to hand!
The intention was to produce the portrait to the standard size of 20" x 16" to fit an off-the-shelf frame. But with Pippa's 'long and low' pose on the chosen photograph, it would left a lot of blank space in the portrait. The final size of the portrait was 19" x 9" which just left a nice amount of area around her. A complimenting coloured pastel paper was chosen for this portrait rather than a contrasting one. Achieving the correct colouring was a little tricky. Pippa wasn't quite a full red Labrador but definitely wasn't a golden Labrador either! There was a great deal of detail to include in this relatively compact portrait, so the pastel pencils had to be kept as sharp as possible throughout to capture all the fine hairs.
The belated birthday present was handed to it's recipient at Christmas and they were delighted with it! It was framed in a specially made oak frame and apparently the only problem now is where to hang it!
